Pre Season Pondering

WOW WOW WOW – Is football season really here??? Just doesn’t seem right what with the Stanley Cup finals set to start TOMORROW!  But yes, it’s time to start anew.  Of course anew for the Bomber’s is mostly just a NEW stadium.  Yes the smell of fresh paint, fresh turf and (hopefully) fresh food will be greeting the Bomber faithful Wednesday night.  Those of us from Section W will be spread out throughout the stadium.  Mostly I think on the East side so we’ll also have new neighbours.  But amongst the hoopla, pomp and pageantry that will accompany opening night (Wednesday is just a dress rehearsal for the real home opener on June 27th), there’s still the minor annoyance of having to field a football team.  On that front, I’d say the verdict is still out with the Bombers.  A couple of new back up QB’s for sure, some talented receivers stepping up and the return of both Chris Garret and Chad Simpson in the back field gives some hope on Offence, but as it has for the past 2 years, success on that side of the ball will fall to Buck Pierce and hence the need for an expanded infirmary in the bowels of IGF.  On defence though, it’s much the same group that gave up a whooping 531 points last year.  Tim Burke has already expressed his concerns in the development of his secondary in training camp and with Jonathan Hefney already reaching his season high performance on May 31, it could get ugly back there.

In June though, in the CFL, everyone’s a Grey Cup champ and hope truly does spring eternal.
