Introduction

I start with the standings simply to reiterate my mantra from previous weeks. The best place to be in the CFL in 2014 is going to be the 4th place finish in the West. Take a look. If the playoffs were to start today, the match ups would be as follows:

Sask 7-2 vs.   Edmonton 7-2 with the winner going on to play the 8-1 Stamps

Winnipeg 6-4 vs. Hamilton 2-6 with the winner going on to play the 3-7 Argos!!!

Simply put the best road for the Bombers is to go through the Eastern division! The only thing stopping them from doing that is the BC Lion’s whom the Bombers play 2 more times this season. Win those two games and the rest of season becomes filler.

Wonky for sure, but after all this is the CFL.

So does all that make today’s game meaningless? Uhmmmm….well there is that little rivalry with them there banjo pickin inbreeds.

Welcome to the Corbett Report. Welcome to the Banjo Bowl.

Just another game?

I totally get the concept that in an 18 game season all games are equally important. That a win in week one is the same as a win in week eighteen. I get the concept, I just don’t buy it. Let’s face it; the Bombers were given a rather soft schedule in the first ½ of the season.   Now, with a 6 – 4 record, they’re set up nicely to make the playoffs. But, consider that 6 of their last 8 games are against west (including 2 with Calgary) and the need to be able to step up and play with the big boys becomes a necessity. Which headline would you rather see on Monday:

7 – 4 Bombers solidify hold on a playoff position

Or

6 –   5 Bombers to face Lions in last place showdown next week

The Bombers are 1 – 3 against Western opponents. Lose another to the Riders (and go 0-3 against them) and those predicting a mediocre 5 or 6 win season will be screaming “I told you so!” Win on Sunday, and the Bombers will be able to prove that their 6 – 4 start wasn’t just a gift from the schedule maker.

Just another game???? Not a chance! If ever there was a must-win Banjo Bowl, this is it!

Five keys to success

So what are the five key’s to success this week

  • Stop the run
  • Keep Willy upright
  • Hang onto the ball!!!! (Win the turnover game)
  • Score early and get the crowd into it.
  • Cover Dressler!

The prediction

A few weeks back I predicted the Bombers would go 1 – 2 against the Riders. This is the one!

Winnipeg 32         Riders 18

Take THAT you melon heads!!!!
