Introduction
Ahh . . . the home opener! The boys are indeed back in town. Well, more specifically one boy is back in town, he being Chris Streveler who’s here, not to play, but to celebrate his retirement at the tailgate party tonight!
So what endeared Strevey to the Bomber faithful that would warrant a retirement party for him? Maybe it was his unabashed joy in celebrating the 2019 Grey Cup (remember the cigar smoking, beer guzzling, fur coat donning Streveler in the Grey Cup parade). Or maybe it’s how he often spoke so fondly about Winnipeg fans. How after his NFL stint ended, he returned to what he called his true football home. Or maybe it’s just the grit and determination that he showed in the 2019 Grey Cup run that truly left a mark with the Bomber fans.
Streveler’s career has come to an end. In 2025, after re-signing with the Bombers, it became apparent that he wasn’t destined to be the Bomber QB of the future. For all of his positives, it was apparent that he didn’t have the skill set to be a starting QB in the CFL. Running back? Maybe, but QB, unfortunately, no. His injury in the last game of the 2025 season probably gave the Bombers an easy out. It’s unlikely he would have re-signed for 2026 and while it’s unfortunate to end a career because of an injury, perhaps it gave all parties an easy out. Whatever the case, a retirement celebration for Chris Streveler is a great way to launch the 2026 season for the Bombers. Best of luck in the future Strevey.

Bombers
There’s only one game in the books for the 2026 season, but it was a dandy. A 30-28 victory over the Stampeders. It proved that the Bombers shouldn’t be counted out quite as quickly as many CFL prognosticators have done. On offence, it started with Collaros who completed a respectable 60% of his passes for 233 yards (with 1 interception and 1 TD) and ended with Brady Oliveria rushing for 113 yards. The core of the last 4 seasons for the Bomber offence seems to be intact. Rumours of their demise seem to be premature. It also included an exciting addition to the Bombers for 2026. Tim White caught 5 of 6 passes thrown his way and ended the game with 60 yards receiving and a touchdown.
The real improvement over last year (again, measured on the small sample size of a single game), is on defence. In particular, 4 sacks against Calgary seem to indicate the D-Line is much improved. Anchored of course by Willie Jefferson, also of the “rumours of his demise” group.
The Bombers will get a tough test tonight against the Ti-Cats, but so far, so good.
Ti-Cats
The Ti-Cats are to the 2000s what the Bombers were to the 1990s. The Cats now hold the longest Grey Cup winless streak having last won in 1999. This year they’re all in again with Bo-Levi Mitchell. Could it be their last kick at the cat (so to speak) with BLM? Their season got off to a difficult start last week with a 30-27 OT loss to the Alouettes. Still, many are suggesting that Hamilton is the class of the East for 2026. Tonight will be a good test of that hypothesis.
Keys to the game
For the Bombers to win
- Score early to get the hometown crowd into it
- Continue to give Oliveria the ball
- O-Line needs to protect Zach
For the Ti-Cats to win
- Score early to take the hometown crowd out of it
- Win the matchup with their D-Line vs. the Bombers O-Line (pressure Zach)
- Hold Oliveria to less than 100 yards rushing
The predictions
Last week the Corbett Report went 3-0 picking all road teams as winners. Let’s try the opposite this week:
Montreal over Toronto
Saskatchewan over BC
And;
The West division is going to be a battle this year. In the East it’s going to be all about the Cats. But I’m picking the home side in this one as well. Bombers will ride to victory on the backs of their fans.
Bombers 31 Ti-Cats 26
