The Corbett Report, August 14, 2026

Introduction

To say this season has been a disappointment would be a bit of an understatement.  Sure, the team is 4-4 but let’s face it, they haven’t shown anyone that they’re capable of being Grey Cup contenders.  Take a look at their 4 victories:

Week one (road): A walk-off field goal by Castillo wins the game: Bombers 30, Calgary 28

Week five (road): Bombers do just enough to escape Hamilton with a 14-13 victory after BLM goes down with an injury

Week six (home-ish): Probably the Bombers’, and definitely Dru Brown’s, best game of the year.  Bombers defeat the Argos 30-21

Week seven (road): Bombers need quadruple OT to defeat the hapless Redblacks 36-34

Combined score in victories: Bombers 110 – Opponents 96

Then, look at their 4 losses:

Week two (home): Ti-Cats (BLM) feast on the Bombers secondary enroute to a 37-27 victory

Week four (home): Edmonton puts up 388 yards of net offence.  Bombers don’t look like they belong in the game where the score flatters them.  Edmonton 23, Bombers 18       

Week eight (home): Dru Brown throws 4 interceptions and the rest of the team offers zero support as Calgary rolls to a 52-30 victory

Week nine (home): Bombers give up an all-time league record 377 yards rushing (160 by 3^rd string QB Kaidon Salter) and fall to the Lions 35-19

Combined score in losses: Opponents 147 – Bombers 94

A prudent observer might suggest that the Bombers barely scraped by in their victories and got embarrassed in their defeats.

What’s worse is that all four losses have been at home.  Time for the Bombers to show whether they have what it takes to be a contender this year or whether it’ll be just more of the same in the weeks to come.

Bombers

Tonight marks the return of Zach Collaros.  Against an 0-8 team, this is a game that the Bombers simply have to win.  It’s not that their record is all that awful (4-4) it’s the way they’ve gotten there that’s the concern.  As the introduction notes, this is a team that is a cause for much head scratching.  Each week it seems like something different is their ailment.  Perhaps this is the game where they finally turn it around. 

Doubtful for this game is Brady Oliveira (a game time decision).  If he can’t go, look to Matthew Peterson to be his replacement (who? you ask).  Also of note, Taylor Elgersma is now on the practice roster, so we won’t see him if Zach struggles.

The Bombers are coming off a game that saw them give up an all time CFL record of 377 yards rushing.  Clearly that can’t happen again.

Redblacks

The Redblacks record is 0-8.  What’s amazing is that for many of those 8 losses Ottawa has been in the game until, well, they weren’t.  Last week was no exception. Down by just a touchdown at the half, they totally fell apart in the 4^th quarter and ended up at the wrong end of a 42-20 score.  That’s been the story of their season.  Still, they have to win sometime, right?

Keys to the game

For the Bombers to win

• Stop the run game
• Pressure the Redblacks QB
• Don’t turn the ball over (duh)

For the Redblacks to win

• Lead the game after the first quarter
• Stop the Bombers’ run game
• Win the turnover battle

The predictions

Record so far this year: 17-13 (Bomber games 4 – 4). 

This week look for:

BC to upset Calgary

Edmonton to win at home against the Argos

Saskatchewan to win on the road in Hamilton

And

Bombers need to return to their winning ways at Princess Auto Stadium.  The Redblacks may just be the cure for that to happen.
